MacBook Won't Turn On? Causes and Fixes

Short answer

Most of the time a MacBook that "won't turn on" isn't actually dead — it's a power/charging issue or a black screen while the Mac is really running. Try a different charger and outlet, then force-restart by holding the power button for about 10 seconds. If there's still no sign of life — or the Mac was dropped or exposed to liquid — it's likely a hardware fault that needs a proper diagnosis.

Is it really off — or just a black screen?

Before anything else, work out whether your MacBook is truly powered off or simply showing a black screen while running. They look identical but have completely different fixes.

Press the power button and watch and listen closely: do you hear a startup chime or fans spinning? Does the keyboard backlight or caps-lock key light up? If there's any sign of activity, the Mac is on and you likely have a display or backlight problem, not a power one. Try turning screen brightness all the way up, and shine a torch at the screen at an angle — if you can faintly see the desktop, it's the backlight.

If there's total silence — no fans, no lights, no chime — then it's genuinely not powering on, and the steps below are where to start.

Quick fixes to try first

Work through these in order — they resolve a large share of "won't turn on" cases at home:

  1. Check the power sourcePlug into a wall outlet you know works, not a power strip or extension. Try a different socket.
  2. Try a different charger and cableA faulty charger or frayed cable is one of the most common causes. Borrow a known-good Apple charger if you can, and check the cable and port for damage.
  3. Look for the charging lightOn MagSafe models, the connector should glow amber or green. No light can mean a charger, port or battery issue.
  4. Force restartHold the power button (Touch ID) down for about 10 seconds, release, then press it once more. This clears a frozen or hung state.
  5. Drain residual powerLeave it charging for at least 15–30 minutes before trying again — a fully flat battery can appear completely dead at first.
  6. Disconnect everythingUnplug all accessories, dongles, external drives and displays, then try to power on with just the charger connected.
  7. Reset the SMC (Intel Macs)On older Intel MacBooks, resetting the System Management Controller can fix power issues. Apple-silicon Macs (M1/M2/M3) do this automatically on restart, so just leave it off for 30 seconds and try again.
If your MacBook was exposed to liquid, do not try to charge or power it on. Powering a wet board can cause more damage — see what to do after water damage.

Common reasons a MacBook won't turn on

If the quick fixes didn't help, one of these is usually the cause:

When it's a hardware fault

Some signs point to a repair that DIY steps won't fix. Get a professional diagnosis if any of these apply:

Depending on the cause, this is usually a logic board repair, a battery replacement, or water damage repair. If your files matter and the Mac won't start, data recovery can retrieve them even from a dead machine.

How we diagnose a MacBook that won't turn on

At our Business Bay workshop we start every "no power" case with a free diagnosis. We check the charger and port, measure whether power is reaching the board, test the battery, and inspect for liquid damage or a component fault. You get a clear explanation of the cause and a fixed quote before any work begins — and if it turns out to be nothing more than a cable, we'll tell you that too.

MacBook won't turn on — FAQs

Usually a faulty charger or cable, a charging-port fault, or a battery that won't take charge. Try a different known-good charger and outlet, look for the charging light, and leave it charging 30 minutes. If there's still no response, it likely needs a hardware diagnosis.
Press and hold the power button (the Touch ID key on most models) for about 10 seconds, release, then press it once more. This clears a frozen or hung state without harming your data.
If you hear fans or see keyboard lights, the Mac is running and you have a display or backlight fault. Turn brightness up fully and shine a torch at the screen — if you can faintly see the desktop, it's the backlight, which is a repairable display issue.
Do not charge it or try to power it on — that can worsen the damage. Turn it off, don't press keys, and get it to a repair specialist quickly for corrosion cleaning. The sooner liquid damage is treated, the better the outcome.
Often yes. Even when a Mac won't power on, the data on the drive can frequently be recovered. If your files aren't backed up, mention this first so we prioritise data safety during diagnosis.
It depends on the cause — a cable or battery is inexpensive, while a logic board repair costs more. We diagnose free and quote a fixed price before any work, so you can decide with the facts in front of you.
